Great footage and a good editor is the gift that keeps on giving. At fig films, my team and I won a telly for cinematography on this production. 2 years later, we are still using it to cut new “sizzle” pieces for our clients. This time for The Chicago Yacht Club to help in promoting the race and to build anticipation.

We shot this for a completely different purpose. Recutting footage for a new piece uses a different part of my brain. The one that I constantly fight with- keeping an open mind to possibility.

The interview is from one of my favorites ever, I got to interview Bill Pickney. He was the first African American man to sail solo around the world. I loved his lessons and passion around sailing.

What you don’t know is that the clip presented here, is pieced together from 10 different answers to different questions in his interview. Since his answers were focused around a different purpose originally, I had to recut them to make sense for this one. The footage is also cut from my “warm up” shots on the day of the shoots. Meaning, the getting ready shots were never originally intended for an edit. I always get to a shoot an hour early and start filming to warm myself up. So that when the event begins, I am ready to rock. A practice that paid off here.

Proof again, that while I don’t condone having to “fix” problems in the editing room that a good editor and strong footage can make anything possible. It’s having the right person at the edit bay, with the right skill set that can make a difference. In college, I loved found footage projects. It was like a hard puzzle that had a cool pay off. This skill is no different. Editors know what I’m talking about. :)

I am slated to cut 2 more this week in the same way…stay tuned. Check out fig films here.
